Poem a Day: Day 22, Earth Day

Where were you on April 22, 1970?  I was in my senior year of high school.  Our English teacher, Mrs. Jenkins, inspired us to take charge and organize Earth Day activities the school.

See this flag?  I made one for the school.  Today’s poem is inspired by a discussion on Facebook with my high school friends about that day forty-one years ago.

a white pillow case flag
the Earth Day symbol
painted upon it in
fresh green grass color
flew above the
high school

flowers planted in dirt
filled boxes all the
while the black coffin made
its way throughout the
campus
“Take care of
Mother Earth,” it
warned or
face death–

forty-one years
ago the first Earth Day
and I wonder
what progress have we made?
