Thank you to Two Writing Teachers for holding space for us to sharing our writing every Tuesday.
Poetry Friday is hosted by Heidi at My Juicy Little Universe. Thank you, Heidi. She suggested that we honor Billy Collins as his birthday is in March. At Check It Out, I have his poem, “The First Line of a Poem”. Here, I’ve taken some of his words from that poem to write a first draft:
flutters
squinting
wind
thread
rise
moon
slides
thin loop
singing
At the First Light of Day
Words flutter away from dreams
as the singing moon rises
grasping conversation threads
Words slide onto the pages
as the wind creates thin loops
squinting as the night sky fades
stitching poems together
stitching poems together
stitching poems together

I love what happens when we borrow bits from a “done” text and reweave–or restitch–them into a whole new poetry garment. Lovely.
Fun visuals and word play in your poem, the words are wonderfully personified, and I’m drawn in!
Well stitched, Jone!
The repetition of the stitching at the end is brilliant. Huzzah!
Jone, this is lovely. I’m intrigued by the words you chose and I love the repetition at the end. Bravo! This celebration has been more than fun. I’ve learned so much from you all.
To be inspired by Billy Collins…thanks for continuing the pleasure of his words.
Jone, I love what you did with this poem, created with Billy’s words. The first stanza is dreamy as it rises. I like the ending as Catherine said.
Words and dreams…dreams and words. This is beautiful Jone!
Great idea to take ten words and write after Billy Collins. Your poem is a lovely homage to writing poetry.
Lovely, Jone. You’ve stitched a beautiful poem together here.
I like your poem, and I’ve been experiencing that a lot lately: waking up with words that want to slide onto a page. Ruth, thereisnosuchthingasagodforsakentown.blogspot.com
This is gorgeous, Jone! I especially love the repetition of “stitching poems together.” I may have to borrow that. Happy writing!
