SOLSC19: 17/31: Candied Yams

It’s March and the Slice of Life Challenge. Thanks to Two Writing Teachers for providing space for writers.

Tomorrow’s prompt for the Poetry Challenge this month is canned soup or any kind of canned food.

My mom always made candied yams at the holidays. Yams for a can. I prefer mine fresh.

Naked Yams

Mom opened

the can of candied yams.

Dumped them

into a dish.

Mushy, slightly slimy,

brown sugar and mustard

So glad she wasn’t of the ilk

to add marshmallows

Me?

Yams at holidays

are best served

baked, skinned, and naked

What about you? What canned foods do you like or despise?

  1. Book Dragon says:

The first half of your poem made me feel ‘ick’.
I rarely use canned foods as I prefer fresh or frozen.
